Well this is exciting! I have a new show to announce.

I am showing generative art works along with photography by Chris MaGee at the Gagné Contemporary Gallery in Toronto starting on May 10th!

If you’re in Toronto, I would really appreciate seeing some familiar faces at the opening! The reception runs from 6 - 8pm on May 10th! A week from today.

The following is the announcement from the curator, John Gagné.

EXTRACTION
Stephen Boyd / Chris MaGee
Opening Friday, May 10, 6-8pm

Gagné Contemporary is pleased to present EXTRACTION, a two-person show of abstract work by Stephen Boyd and Chris MaGee. The show runs May 10 - June 2, 2024. Join us on Friday, May 10 from 6-8pm for the Opening. Both artists will be present. Music by DJ Cuthbert Steel.

Stephen uses code and data sets from geological seismic activity to generate visually striking mathematic expressions. Inspiring his work are 60's generative artists Manfred Mohr and Vera Molnàr as well as the geometric forms of Sol LeWitt.

Chris has found that his photographs, rendered as high-contrast abstractions and arranged in triptych sets, open up possibilities of time and an implied narrative. For the artist, a harkening back to the comic strips he read as a child through to the violent tableaux of Francis Bacon.

Both artists are using the tools of their practice – one strictly programmatic, one analog – in a manner that pushes conventional use beyond convention. And both extract from their found raw material a visual territory that invites close scrutiny, as patterns and collisions merge into brilliant, rigorous forms.

Stephen Boyd is a Toronto artist who uses code and data sets to reveal patterns and emergent structures. He has exhibited his work in solo and group shows, and has presented his research at events like the Marshall McLuhan Festival and Siggraph. As an educator, Stephen has worked with the University of Toronto and the Ontario College of Art & Design on the nature of designing with code, data visualization and generative art. Recently his work was shown at Gallery 1313, Gerrard Art Space and the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair.

Chris MaGee is a Toronto artist who studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design. Beginning his artistic career in drawing and painting, his work has branched out to include collage, photography, and text-based pieces. Since 2013 MaGee has incorporated sound into his artistic practice, releasing 10 albums of sound art on the Easy Item Music label. His work has been featured at The Loft Gallery (Toronto, Canada), Hinterhof (Darmstadt, Germany), and Millennium Film Workshop (Brooklyn, NY).

Gagné Contemporary works with artists across New York City, USA and Toronto, Canada – part of an art advisory that includes gallery exhibitions, artist representation and a curatorial practice.

The gallery is located in a former stable in the laneway by Hideaway Park, Leslieville, Toronto – behind 136 Brooklyn Avenue.
